When Do You Need Mesothelioma Attorney – Symptoms of Cancer ...

Mesothelioma is a type of preventable cancer that is caused by inhaling the dust or particles of the deadly mineral Asbestos. The symptoms range from shortness of breath, chest pains, and persistent cough in the early stages to abdominal pain, swelling and tumors growing in the tissues that surround the heart and if left untreated could cause death within 24 months.

It has a long latency period in that the symptoms of the disease can take many years to manifest, making both diagnosis and effective treatment very difficult. Therefore, people who worked with asbestos industry perhaps thirty or forty years ago are only now being diagnosed with this disease.

Nuclear Test Rules out Radiation

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A recent study from the University of Adelaide in South Australia reveals cancer rates among Australian men involved in the 1950s British nuclear tests are 23-percent higher than those of the general population. Despite the increase in cancer rates, research has found no link to radiation exposure. Data from this study did suggest probable asbestos-related cancer in navy personnel.

The three-year study investigated the health effects of 11,000 men, all of whom took part in the British nuclear tests in Australia from 1952 to 1963. Twenty-six men had cases of mesothelioma, a cancer strongly associated with asbestos. Of the 26, 16 were involved in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) -- nearly three times the amount researchers expected. Researchers also discovered higher than average rates of lung cancer, which is also asbestos related, in RAN personnel.

MP slams decision to ditch asbestos drug

ROCHDALE MP Paul Rowen has slammed the ‘disgraceful' decision to withdraw a vital drug used by people fighting the deadly asbestos disease mesothelioma.

He says the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) decision to withdraw the drug Alimta for NHS patients has been done for purely financial reasons.

It will affect scores of people in Rochdale, which has an above-average number of mesothelioma sufferers because of the town's past links with the asbestos industry.

The Turner Brothers complex at Spotland was once the largest asbestos factory in the world.

Mr Rowen said: "I find the decision of Nice to be disgraceful. They have quite obviously put money before people's suffering and I am shocked.

"Experts have told me the Nice appraisal cost around £1M, yet the cost of using this effective drug is estimated to be only £3M a year.

Government help for victims of Mesothelioma

Proposals to help victims of mesothelioma, a particularly debilitating form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, will be debated in the House of Commons today.

MPs will debate Government amendments to the Compensation Bill which seek to reverse the effects of the House of Lords' Barker vs Corus judgment in mesothelioma cases.

The practical effects of the Law Lords' judgment would mean that claims could take much longer to be concluded, and would make them much more difficult and time-consuming for claimants in circumstances where they and their families are already under considerable pain and stress. In some cases, claimants would not receive full compensation.

DCA Minister Bridget Prentice said;

"These amendments will mean proper compensation for thousands of people who contract this terrible disease because they were negligently exposed to asbestos."

The amendment will ensure that people suffering from mesothelioma due to another's negligence will be able to receive full compensation from any responsible person as quickly as possible.
