Provision thrown out in WR Grace case

A federal judge has again thrown out a key portion of the criminal case against W.R. Grace and Co. and seven one-time employees. The dismissed allegations were a central element of a conspiracy count that lies at the core of the case against Grace, and accused top executives of knowingly endangering miners and residents in Libby, where the company's now-defunct vermiculite mine released dangerous cancer-causing asbestos into the air.

ABI scheme tops Commons compensation debate

The government has yet to decide on the insurance industry's proposals for a compensation body for mesothelioma claimants. At a debate in the House of Commons yesterday, the scheme's advocate Conservative MP, Oliver Heald, requested the government's position on the proposed scheme which he tabled as Clause 6 of the Compensation Bill.

Mr. Oliver Heald (North-East Hertfordshire) (Con): "Does not the Minister recognise that the Barker v. Corus case, which she mentions, was brought by the Government and therefore that she is seeking to overturn with that amendment what the Government argued for in court? We welcome that, but does not she accept that that is hardly joined-up government? Many victims of this crippling disease still cannot trace an employer or an insurer, so they will not be able to make a claim at the moment.

City Voices, City Visions: This is Their World

Right now I'm at the ThinkBright Summer Digital Institute at WNED Television in Buffalo, NY, where I gave a keynote this morning about the role of Web 2.0 in education. (I'll upload a podcast and powerpoint of it later.) One of the highlights of the day was learning about an uber-cool project here in Buffalo called City Voices, City Visions (CVCV). The program teaches secondary school educators how to integrate video production into the curriculum. So far, dozens of educators have received training, and their students are producing videos on a wide range of subjects, from social studies to poetry. They've put together a video FAQ about the project, addressing questions that educators often have about the initiative. There are also several dozen student videos online at the CVCV website.

My favorite, video, by far, was a project called In Our World Today.

NN jury awards widow $10 million in asbestos lawsuit

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- A jury awarded $10.4 million to the widow of a former shipyard worker who died of lung cancer after four years of working with materials that contained asbestos.

The Newport News Circuit Court verdict in Wanda Jones' wrongful death lawsuit against three companies that manufactured the materials was handed down Wednesday, the first anniversary of the death of 60-year-old Buddy Jones.

"It's a mixed day," Wanda Jones said. "At least there's been some justice and recognition for what he went through, certainly through no fault of his own. He just went to work and did what he was trained to do on the job."

Her attorney, Robert Hatten, called the verdict a landmark because one-third of the judgment will come from John Crane Inc., which has refused to settle other asbestos cases.
