Payout boost for mesothelioma patients

HUNDREDS of workers in Swindon who are suffering from mesothelioma have been given a helping hand in speeding up compensation payouts.

The Government has announced that a standard claim letter and leaflet were being developed in a bid to make settlements more quickly.

Work and Pensions Secretary John Hutton said his department would also work with HM Revenue and Customs to trace employers' records and the Association of British Insurers will also open a phone inquiry helpline in the autumn.

MP slams decision to ditch asbestos drug

ROCHDALE MP Paul Rowen has slammed the ‘disgraceful' decision to withdraw a vital drug used by people fighting the deadly asbestos disease mesothelioma.

He says the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) decision to withdraw the drug Alimta for NHS patients has been done for purely financial reasons.

It will affect scores of people in Rochdale, which has an above-average number of mesothelioma sufferers because of the town's past links with the asbestos industry.

The Turner Brothers complex at Spotland was once the largest asbestos factory in the world.

Mr Rowen said: "I find the decision of Nice to be disgraceful. They have quite obviously put money before people's suffering and I am shocked.

"Experts have told me the Nice appraisal cost around £1M, yet the cost of using this effective drug is estimated to be only £3M a year.

Asbestos sufferers set to win fair play

The Government moved last night to overturn a House of Lords decision on compensation for asbestos-related deaths.

Legal affairs minister Bridget Prentice outlined amendments to the Compensation Bill to reverse the effects of the Barker v Corus judgment in mesothelioma cases.

She said: "I recognise that this is an exceptional step - but I believe that it is justified in the exceptional circumstances that apply here."

Law lords ruled that workers exposed to asbestos dust by several employers must seek compensation from each.

Since 2002, sufferers had been able to seek full compensation without proving which employer had caused the exposure.

When Do You Need Mesothelioma Attorney – Symptoms of Cancer ...

Mesothelioma is a type of preventable cancer that is caused by inhaling the dust or particles of the deadly mineral Asbestos. The symptoms range from shortness of breath, chest pains, and persistent cough in the early stages to abdominal pain, swelling and tumors growing in the tissues that surround the heart and if left untreated could cause death within 24 months.

It has a long latency period in that the symptoms of the disease can take many years to manifest, making both diagnosis and effective treatment very difficult. Therefore, people who worked with asbestos industry perhaps thirty or forty years ago are only now being diagnosed with this disease.
